Gap Analysis TOR

Gap Analysis of African University Staff Competence and Capacity to Support Experiential Learning and Innovation Processes
URL:
http://www.ruforum.org

The shift in focus from simple agro-production to value chains requires a complete shift in graduates’ knowledge and skills. Traditionally, universities have concentrated on training graduates in field production. Yet the recent trends of globalization, urbanization, ICTs, liberationalisation, privatization, energy challenges, among others, demand that graduates are also skillful in post-field production activities such as agro-processing, marketing and negotiations. Moreover, the development of agro-processing and marketing has not received the level of research support it deserves. This has resulted in weak linkages between researchers and farmers and a mismatch between what the farmers want and actually obtain. Yet for farmers to benefit, agriculture should incorporate relevant and innovative aspects of agro-processing, and marketing that are practical to resource poor farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Agricultural practitioners thus require a different skills set for supporting smallholder farmers towards commercializing of their farming ventures. For universities to deliver such ‘problem solvers” requires new approaches for incalculating the requisite skills in graduates to support farmer-led agriculture in a new World. What remains unclear is the current ability of university based staff to train in these approaches. The approach requires that students and faculty work closely with farmers, agro-entrepreneurs, policy makers and others on problems affecting agriculture and rural livelihoods.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS (R-CFP/NAG/10/03)

Document RUFORUM’s genesis, evolution and successes (1992-2010)
URL:
http://www.ruforum.org

RUFORUM has undergone three distinct phases since its inception- the first phase was as the Forum on Agricultural Resource Husbandry (FORUM) as part of the Rockefeller Foundation’s Food Security Programme (1992-2004), then the initial RUFORUM (2004-2008) with a three person Secretariat in Kampala to the current third phase (2008-to date), of a 15 person Secretariat in Kampala with expanded scope. In the second phase, over 300 students were supported under the RUFORUM Programme before 2009. Today, over 200 M.Sc. and 85 Ph.D students are enrolled in RUFORUM Programmes.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS (R-CFP/NAG/10/02)

Video Documentary on RUFORUM
URL:
http://www.ruforum.org
There has been little attempt to market RUFORUM in the past and their contribution to universities and subsequently national development trends. The aim of this consultancy is market RUFORUM to the wider agricultural community as a viable mechanism and approach for supporting African capacity building at the post- graduate level in Sub-Saharan Africa. This is being undertaken side by side with other consultancies to market RUFORUM, such as the design and printing of the RUFORUM Brochure, and a book on RUFORUM chronicling RUFORUM through the years. RUFORUM would thus wish to invite interested service providers, with relevant skills and qualifications, to produce a documentary film for RUFORUM on RUFORUM.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS (R-CFP/M&E/10/02)

Terms of Reference for a Consultancy to Undertake an ASTI Study in Uganda
URL:
http://www.ruforum.org

Recognising the depth and breadth of the challenge facing the network, RUFORUM works closely with a number of partners in the region towards achievement of her mission. Agricultural development can be achieved through well facilitated multi-stakeholder processes. This involves bringing different actors to analyse the Agricultural Science, Technology and Innovation (ASTI) systems, have shared problem understanding and defining appropriate solutions. RUFORUM has been working with partners, with support from the Technical Center for Rural Cooperation in Agriculture (CTA) to better understand ASTI systems in ECSA. In continuation of these, studies, RUFORUM and CTA would like to undertake a study of this nature in Uganda and is calling for interested person/ teams to conduct such a study.

CALLS FOR PROPOSALS: Information and Guidelines for Applicants

Guidelines

Calls for proposals are posted on the RUFORUM website and also sent via email to all the member universities and other stakeholders. There are normally two types of calls: open calls where proposals are submitted throughout the year, and specific calls which target specific themes and / or gap areas. The latter will normally have specific deadlines. In both cases, each call, including scholarship applications, specifies the eligibility criteria, application format, amount of grant, and the review criteria.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS 2009 [Call ID: RU/CFP/CGS/TADS/09/1]

TADS

Background
Livestock play a pivotal role in the security of livelihoods in Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA), and are an important national income earner in the region. Among the pastoral communities, livestock is often the sole source of livelihood. However, the livestock sector is faced with challenges that significantly constrain both its productivity and viability. Key among these challenges is outbreaks of Transboundary Animal Diseases (TADS), such as Pestes des petits des ruminants (PPR), Trypanosomosis, Rift Valley Fever (RVR), East Coast Fever (ECF) and Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD). These diseases are threatening the security of livelihoods in the ESA region. Eruption of some of these diseases is increasingly being linked to climatic events and livestock movement. It is against this background that the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM)
has initiated activities to work jointly with other actors and target communities to enhance regional capacity for management of TADs.
