Developing Africa through Science, Technology and Innovations in Agriculture: “Women as key drivers”

Science, Women, Africa, Technology, Agriculture, Innovation

IFS_CTA_RUFORUM ReportThe International Foundation for Science (IFS), the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) and the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) have the pleasure to present to you a report on the Regional Workshop on Developing Africa through Science, Technology and Innovations in Agriculture, “Women as key drivers”. The workshop was held at Imperial Resort Beach Hotel, Entebbe, Uganda, from 28th September to 2nd October, 2009. This workshop was a follow-up to a prior workshop hosted by RUFORUM, CTA and the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) of 2006, which aimed to increase the engagement of African women scientists in addressing the food and nutrition situation in Africa. IFS, RUFORUM and CTA acknowledge that despite these and many other efforts, various issues continue to limit the participation of African women in science, technology and innovation (ST&I) in Africa.

Global Challenges University Alliance 1st Workshop: Biofuels and Biorefineries

Biofuels, Biorefineries, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Abstracts

1st International Global Challenges University Alliance workshop: Biofuels and Biorefineries, SLU, Uppsala, September 26-28, 2012

The Global Challenges University Alliance
By 2050 the world's population will exceed nine billion, requiring agricultural, forest and fisheries systems to produce food, animal feed, fibres, energy and materials for another two billion people. The crucial issue is how to achieve this with very little new land to use, without causing unsustainable ecological consequences and during an on‐going climate change. Meeting these global challenges can only be done through obtaining greater scientific knowledge about the fundamental conditions for life – translating knowledge into relevant action – and through dedicated international co‐operation. The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) has recently initiated a project to form a Global Challenges University Alliance, and is planning to involve 25 of the world’s top "bio‐economy" universities at all continents. The partner universities should be strong in agricultural sciences (including food, veterinary, landscape architecture and forest sciences), environmental sciences and/or the life sciences.

Deans' Pre-Annual General Meeting 2011

Deans' Meeting 2011

The AGM of 2010 held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, established a RUFORUM Deans’ Committee as one of the Board’s Sub-Committee to principally provide feedback to the Secretariat on RUFORUM activities at country and university levels. Prior to the 2011 AGM, a Deans’ and principals meeting has been convened to deliberate on recent developments and anchor the Deans’ Committee in fulfilling its role as one of the organs of RUFORUM for championing regional, national and university level presence. RUFORUM has a governance structure which is designed to promote ownership of the organization by the member universities while at the same time ensuring good international practices and quality. The Deans’ Committee, formally constituted in 2010 after restructuring of RUFORUM has membership from the Deans of faculties of agriculture and related sciences from member universities.

This Deans’ meeting will precede and feed into the 7th AGM which coincides with a number of key developments at the Secretariat and within its networks including approval and operationalization of a new Business Plan (2011-2016) and other key policy and operational strategies and manuals. The Deans’ meeting will serve the purpose to refocus the role of the Deans’ Committee in the new dispensation of the Business Plan and in view of recent changes in agricultural tertiary education landscape in Africa and beyond. Specifically it will deliberate on the roles, responsibilities and institutionalization of core programme areas like competitive grants, ICT, M&E and regional postgraduate training. The Deans will also elect a Chair person of their Committee to serve up to the 2012 AGM.

Venue and Dates: Bridge View Hotel - 27th – 28th August 2011

Organisers: RUFORUM, University of Malawi, Malawi National Forum

Annual General Meeting

RUFORUM Annual General Meeting 2011

RUFORUM has a governance structure which is designed to promote ownership of the organisation by the member universities while at the same time ensuring good international practices and quality. The AGM is one of the seven main governance organs. This will be RUFORUM’s 7th AGM which coincides with a number of key developments at the Secretariat and within its networks including approval and operationalization of a new Business Plan (2011-2016) and other key policy and operational strategies and manuals. It will serve as a learning gathering on the progress made hitherto in engaging universities with agricultural development processes.

Purpose and Objectives of the AGM
In addition to performing its mandatory duty as the supreme decision making organ of RUFORUM, the AGM will also offer a platform to share the new developments at RUFORUM with key stakeholders including strategic directions that RUFORUM is taking in response to the CAADP emerging issues and recent developments in postgraduate training and research in agriculture especially in the Eastern, Central and Southern Africa region.

Proceedings of the Ministerial Conference on Higher Education in Agriculture in Africa (CHEA)

CHEA, Education, Africa
URL:
http://www.ruforum.org/content/proceedings-ministerial-conference-higher-educati...
In March 2008, the meeting of Ministers of Agriculture of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) countries held in Seychelles mandated the COMESA Secretariat to arrange for a high level policy meeting to respond to the above challenge. Attempts were made to hold this meeting in Lusaka, but following the death of the then Zambian President, this was not possible. In September 2009, a meeting of 37 African Universities, and 25 Vice Chancellors from Eastern, Central and Southern Africa, held in Mombasa, Kenya, requested the Government of Uganda to host the Ministerial Conference in Kampala, Uganda. Makerere University was mandated to take leadership in organizing the Conference and was to be supported by  RUFORUM, the Network of 25 African Universities with a Secretariat in Kampala, Uganda. Below are the Proceedings of the successfully concluded Conference.
