FAO South Sudan is implementing a six-year (2024-2030) Climate Resilient Agri-Food Systems Transformation Program Phase 1 (CRAFT-1). The Grant is funded by the African Development Bank under a tripartite agreement between the FAO South Sudan, Government of the Republic of South Sudan / Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAPS) and the African Development Bank. The project aims to transform agriculture in South Sudan into a climate-resilient, inclusive sustainable, business-oriented and commercially viable sector, which creates economic opportunities for women and the youth, improves livelihoods and enhances food and nutrition security.

Project objectives

The overall objective of the project is to increase agricultural productivity and food security and build resilience in South Sudan. The project's specific objectives are to 

  1. Scale up climate-adaptive technologies and production systems;
  2.  Develop women and youth-led businesses in priority value chains; 
  3. Promote digital agricultural and climate advisory solutions; and 
  4. Build vocational, technical, and entrepreneurship skills for more job opportunities for women and youth.
Project activities

The following are the main activities that will support the subcomponent

  1. Enhancing Training Institute Infrastructures and Equipment.
  2. Delivering Quality Technical Training in Agricultural and Fisheries Education & Skills Development.
  3. Supporting Non-Formal Training and Capacity Development Programme for Agriculture and Fisheries Value Chain Actors.
     
Project achievements
  • 5 Competency based curriculum developed for Rice, sorghum and fish value chains
  • Capacity building of 15 faculty staff and 30 technicians in priority areas in agriculture/fisheries enhanced
  • Access to online materials by the University of Juba and University of John Garang enhanced.
  • 10 Female students provided scholarship to pursue bachelor’s degree in agriculture & 4 Female students to pursue master’s in agriculture in South Sudan
  • 40 Beneficiaries are put on programs in South Sudan in various agricultural institutes. / Internships
  • 39 training materials/modules for extension service provision at communities ’level revised
  • 6 Training materials for entrepreneurship and agribusiness revised
  • 50 extension workers trained
  • 80 youths and women trained in entrepreneurship skills and linked to incubation hub
