Our Role
RUFORUM plays a pivotal role in transforming higher education and research institutions in Africa through its multifaceted support to human capital development. Under its Research, Innovation and Development (RID) unit, RUFORUM has implemented several strategic programs aimed at nurturing a new generation of researchers, academics, and innovators who are well-equipped to address the continent's pressing development challenges.
RUFORUM-supported regional MSc and PhD programmes were designed in response to capacity gaps in support of the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP).
RUFORUM's graduate research grants support university faculty in mentoring masters students through academically rigorous yet socially and economically relevant research.
These grants empower students to explore real-world problems, bridging the gap between academic theory and practical application. They target food security, climate adaptation, and agricultural value chains across member countries.
More Information
Doctoral research grants enable students to delve deeper into complex, specialised research areas, producing high-quality scholarship that advances the continent's agricultural science base.
These grants are complemented by structured mentorship, regional mobility, and access to RUFORUM's network of supervisors across African universities.
RUFORUM's Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) programme strengthens teaching capacity at member universities while simultaneously supporting doctoral students' academic careers.
GTAs provide doctoral candidates with structured pedagogical experience, linking research excellence to the next generation of African academics.
More Information
RUFORUM offers post-doctoral fellowships that support early-career academics to deepen their expertise, build research independence, and transition into faculty leadership roles.
Fellows are hosted at leading African universities and gain access to specialised labs, publication support, and mentorship from senior researchers.
More Information
RUFORUM complements its academic programmes with targeted skills enhancement trainings covering scientific writing, grant proposal development, data analysis, and leadership.
Mentorship is a cornerstone of RUFORUM's human capital development philosophy — pairing emerging researchers with established academics to build sustained, long-term capacity across the continent.
Mentorship is embedded at every level: from undergraduate research attachments through to post-doctoral guidance, ensuring continuity and succession in African agricultural science.
