Dr. Namanga Ngongi joined Cameroon’s Ministry of Agriculture in 1968 but left for graduate studies in 1971. He led a Cornell University/Soil Research Institute of Ghana Soil Fertility Project (1975-1978). He returned to Cameroon and was Acting Chief of projects prior to his departure to Rome as Counselor charged with relations with the UN Food Agencies. He was Vice Chair of the FAO Programmes Committee, Vice Chair of the CFS and member of the Executive Board of IFAD. He chaired the African Group of Representatives to the UN Food Agencies in 1983.
Namanga Joined the WFP in 1984 and held several senior positions including Deputy Executive Director 1994-2001. He was appointed UN Under-Secretary General and SRSG DR Congo, Head of the Peacekeeping Mission. He facilitated formation of a transitional government in 2003, returned to WFP and retired.
Namanga was founding president of Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, AGRA (2007-2012) and led the establishment of programmes on Seeds, Soil Health, Markets, Policy and Innovative Finance.
Namanga served on the IITA Board and was Board Chair (2018-2020). He was member of CGIAR SMB, SRG and TAG and participated actively in the creation of One CGIAR. He chaired AFAP’s Board (2012-2021). He chairs the Seed Systems Group (SSG), Africa Catalyzing Action on Nutrition (AfriCAN), the International Center for Evaluation and Development (ICED) and is emeritus member of AFAP and IITA Boards.
Namanga has a BS (Cal Poly), MS and PhD degrees from Cornell University
